by a young man in juvenile detention, age 16

As I begin life
lonely comes to mind,
as I am lonely
like a single human being
left on Earth,
lonely like a punch to the gut
sucking you into a black hole.

I realize how lonely we all can be,
as if you were by yourself in an old house
with one window,
walking back and forth,
hearing the wood scream
with every step.

Lonely is a great summit
of deep, deep feeling.
And from loneliness
I’ve learned to step forward
out of the lonely shadows
and embrace it
as if it were a friend from the past
and near future.
