If I Could Speak

by a young woman in detention

If my fist could speak, it would tell you I am brave and tough.

If my feet could speak, they would recall

how I run away from violence.

If my eyes could speak, they would tell you

about all the things I have seen.

Like when my family is together, it is beautiful.

If my pounding heart could speak, it would say

how scared I am of seeing people die.

If my hair could speak, it would explain it is short and beautiful.

If my ears could speak, they would share

all the hate it hears, all around.

If my body could speak, it would tell you about

how strong and beautiful it is.

If my brain could deal with everything, it would want to ask

why people fight and hate

and why there is so much crime.
