Five Poems

by a young woman in detention

I
You see that I scream.
You see that I cry.
But you don’t know me.

You would know me if…
You knew how hard it was to live.
You knew how I feel sometimes that I’m alone.
You knew how family didn’t care.

You see that I cry.
You see that I smoke.
But you don’t know me.

You would know me if…
You knew how I survive.
You knew how I fight.
You knew how I screamed.

II
My body aches
from the last time
it was broken
into its screams for help
but no one
is listening.

III
I’m cold and lonely.
Please come hold me
till the demons let me go.

IV
I see the rainbow
but there is no color.
I see black and white
just like my heart.

V
She was afraid and crying.
He stood there looking out at her
with evil in his eyes.
He broke her, not only mentally
but also physically
and she can never be fixed.
