by a young man, age 13

I really care about my family,
Especially my little sister.
I feel like I’ve made progress to going home to see them.
I’ve been trying my hardest.
When I do mess up,
I try to fix what I did wrong.
I’m trying to make the right choices instead of the wrong.
The wrong choices look like
A big black hole that’s sucking everything in
Or a big fire that’s burning everything in its path.
When things aren’t going right,
I feel like there’s no hope.
I really love my family,
And I want to be able to stay with them.
Even though I have been trying for fifteen months,
The bit of hope that I have is beginning to die down.
But then my mom came for a visit today,
And it boosted my hope again.
