Lessons Of Courage And Fear
by Kate

In my life I've known Courage.
We met when I was six, fending off a shadowy figure
in a scary dream.
Nowadays Courage comforts me every time I confront shadows
no one else seems to see.

In my life I've known Fear.
We met when I heard the sound of my dad's voice
raised in anger.
These days Fear tricks me with Worry every time I'm in a position
to harm or be harmed.

I've learned that Courage and Fear are similar --
They both influence my course of action.
I've also learned they're different --
When Courage tells me, "Leave it be,"
Fear says, "Beware!" and "Prepare for a fight."
Usually I listen to Fear.
I wish Courage could talk directly to Fear
and leave me out of the loop.
