Maria

by Arden (age 16)

Maria is careless
Her face looks dead
Her eyes are black inside and out
She doesn’t see other people’s pain or feelings
 ’Cause she’s careless

She smells like old musty deodorant
Her skin is black and purple
And her veins are dark blue

She’s loud like the wind
Her mouth never stops like the river
Every morning she wants me to leave
Her jealousy is fierce

She watches me
She watches everything I do like a shadow
She says, “Why are you here?”

Because I am sick
I need help
I need people to care for me

We are in my uncle’s house
She is tweaked out
I’m sober and I’m in pain
Since she wants to kill me, I will leave
