Kaz

by Kaz (age 19)

All they see is the outer layer,
this façade, masquerade,
the man I should be by now.
BUT HIDDEN INSIDE IS STILL THAT TERRIFIED, SILENT
boy WHO CAN'T GRASP THE WORLD AROUND HIM SO HE
MAKES A PRIVATE ONE INSIDE HIS HEAD.
This side,
my Kaz,
he should be gone by now.
He was supposed to have died
with all the painful, frightening memories.
But he's still here.
I MANAGE TO HIDE HIM FOR A WHILE, BUT HE ALWAYS
COMES BACK OUT AND UNKNOWINGLY CAUSES TROUBLE
AND HURTS HIMSELF AND OTHERS WITH HIS ACTIONS.
He's confused.
He's worried.
He runs and hides.
He's a paradox,
terrified of abandonment
yet content to live in silence.
I love him because
he is part of me,
I hate him for the same reason.
