You Didn't Believe Me

by a young woman, age 16

You didn’t believe me
When I said I needed you
I was trying hard not to cry
As you walked away
Saying I was a big girl
I shouldn’t cry
You didn’t believe me
When I said I was in pain
The blood dripping from my open wounds
You screamed, “You a big girl! You shouldn’t cry!”
You didn’t believe me
When I said I wanted to die
The beeping of machines
Me knocked out cold in a hospital bed
“You a big girl! You know what you are doing is stupid!”
You didn’t believe me
When I said it wasn’t me
The broken mirror
My sad eyes staring back at me
“You a big girl! You shouldn’t cry!”
You didn’t believe me when I said
I didn’t want to cry
I didn’t believe myself
When I said
“I’m a big girl… I shouldn’t cry…”
If I did I wouldn’t feel my tears
Rolling down my cheeks
You didn’t believe I didn’t believe me, either.
