You Can't Be Mad Forever

by a young woman, age 17

If I was mad forever,
I’d never get anywhere.
I want to be someone.
You can’t be mad forever.

I’ve been a foster kid
since I was three.
I’ve had to learn that
I can’t run away from my problems.
You can’t be mad forever.

My voice isn’t heard.
If I could be heard
I would get the help I need.
You can’t be mad forever.

They wonder why I skip school,
why kids steal.
There’s always a reason.
You can’t be mad forever.

If I didn’t know that,
I’d be mad about a lot of stuff.
Maybe it’s a good thing
that I am in here.
You can’t be mad forever.

When you have no one to lean on
and you fall down a lot,
you’ve got to pick yourself up.

You can’t be mad forever.
