Worry

by a young man, age 16

Worry feels like a song on replay.

My parents got a divorce.
I don’t want to blame my mother or anything
but she goes around
just throwing her body to other guys.
I’m worried that she’ll come back
with another kid after leaving us.

Worry feels like a song on replay.

I worry about those three friends
I met before I came in here
and how they seemed to like
that I was a bad guy.

Worry feels like something is going to happen
like someone dying
or all the adults leaving juvy
and we would be stuck in here
no food or anything
and the kids on the outside
aren’t even going to think about us.

Worry feels like a song on replay.

I’m worried that my dad won’t think I’ve changed.
We talk every day when he visits
but our relationship is not strong
like a parent and a son should have.

Worry feels like the police could come up on you
any minute and just arrest you
and you wouldn’t know why.

Worry feels like a song on replay.

Put your hands behind your back.
