Where I Come From #2

by a young woman, age 14

I come from a long line of strawberry shortcakes.
My teacher always calls us “Shortcakes.”

I come from a long line of hyper-ness,
Going cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.

I come from a long line of vanilla roses.
I like roses,
And my hair looked like roses when I first was born,
I saw my picture.
It kind of looks like vanilla, too,
Because it has blonde in it.

I come from a long line of long lives.
I’ve been back and forth
In sixteen foster homes, been sexually abused,
It feels like a lot of lives in one.

I come from all over the place,
And I wish my life would settle down
In one place.
That’s where I’d like to come from.
