The Thunder Is in the Past

by a young woman, age 16

There are only attorneys on weekdays
And I got put in on a Friday

New Year’s means times for changes:
Good grades in algebra
Mom and daughter communication
Cardio-respiratory workout to get my heart pumping more

If I had a bonfire on New Year’s Eve
I’d throw Juvie into it
I’d throw trust in people I haven’t truly known
I’d burn the day I ran away from my home
And my statements of hatred

When the fire burned out and the smoke cleared
There would be only gray ashes
That crumble when you touch them
Or fly away when you blow them from your fingers
