My Mother and Drugs

by a young woman, age 17

She still does them.
And she got me started when
I was 13.
I was confused, vulnerable, scared.
I was just an emotional mess.
But my mother and drugs
Are still best friends.

She’ll never leave them,
Even if she tried,
No matter what it does to her family.
She borrows money from relatives
To buy drugs.
She uses my SSI to pay for drugs.
But my mother and drugs
Are still best friends –

Even when her boyfriend
Was doing them with her
And bringing people into the house
To shoot up.
It scared me.
And he was abusing me at the same time,
Hitting me, cursing at me, just yelling at me.
He made my mom do everything for him.
And she never believed me when
I told her he molested me,
Even when CPS got involved.
But my mother and drugs
Are still best friends.

But I’ve moved on
To bigger and better things.
I’m graduating high school.
I’m going on to college.
I’m accomplishing things my mom never did.
Drugs are not my best friend
But my mother is.

Dedicated to my mother
