Metal on Metal

by a young man, age 14

This isn’t the way I planned my life to go.
I’ve been here far too many times,
Walked these halls far too many steps.
I am a caged lion.
I want to roar out my rage,
At these bars, at this cage,
At the chains upon my freedom,
At the separation from those I love.
My heart wants to never come back here,
To find a path around these doors.
I want that path where no one dictates
What I should do, when I should do it.
If I could get along with my probation officer,
If I could make my way through school,
Maybe I would not hear these doors again,
Metal on metal barring my way.
Maybe I would not hear these doors again,
And I could be someplace else, far away.
