If Meth Wasn't in My Life

by a young woman, age 14

If Meth wasn’t in my life I’d be beautiful
            Like a blooming red rose.
If Meth wasn’t in my life I’d feel free
            Like a queen.
If Meth wasn’t in my life I’d feel happy
Like when I’m on the basketball court.

But now that Meth is in my life I feel horrible
Like the little kid I was without my parents.
Now that Meth is in my life I feel unhappy
Like when a loved one dies.
Now that Meth is in my life I feel dead
            Like an incomplete puzzle.

The first hit made all my emotions go away.
I felt happy, on the top of the world.
I felt like the boss, no one could demand
me to do anything.

My next hit brought me away from my problems.
Everyone seemed happy because
I was happy.
I was on drugs because of everyone else.
I couldn’t be successful
Without Meth.
I was a nobody
Without Meth.

My last hit took my breath away.
Unstoppable, like I could run a million miles
From my emotions
From the nightmares
Didn’t have to sleep
When I didn’t want to sleep.
In a dream, where bad news
Wasn’t real news.
Didn’t have to believe,
Didn’t have to listen.
