Prize Poetry

Grief

by a young woman

Don't tell me you understand
Until your verbs go
From "is" to "was"

Don't tell me you understand
Until you fall to the floor
In front of a crowd

Don't tell me you understand
Until you feel helpless
Around your family

Don't tell me you understand
Until you start crying
And can't explain why

[Author Statement: I don't exactly remember how I found Pongo, but I'm glad I did because it's nice to get a personal email from someone each time I submit a poem. Poetry is my way of trying to get people to understand a little bit of how I feel about specific things, and Pongo is my favorite place to share."]
